At Glebe House School it is our belief that every child has the right to and entitlement to a broad and varied English Curriculum. Regardless of ability, we aspire to provide the acquisition and enjoyment of language and literacy in the fullest sense, for all our pupils, both to empower and enrich them.
Aims & Objectives:-
The single most important aim in the teaching of English is to develop the pupils’ capacity for using and responding to language and with this in mind our aims in teaching English are that all pupils will:-
- Be able to speak clearly, confidently and in appropriate forms of speech.
- Be able to listen to the spoken word attentively, with understanding, pleasure and empathy.
- Be able to express themselves, orally in writing and in drama.
- Be able to read fluently and with understanding a range of material both for enjoyment and personal development and for information.
- Be able to write effectively and clearly for a range of audiences and purposes using spelling, punctuation and syntax accurately and confidently.
- Develop their powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness.
- Be well-prepared for entrance examinations to senior schools, scholarships and for the next stage of their education.
In the Prep department English is taught by subject specialists. In Divisions III to VI the curriculum follows broadly the aims of the National Literacy Framework, in Divisions VII and VIII the pupils follow the syllabus for the ISEB Common Entrance Examination, and a number of our pupils prepare for scholarship examinations for their chosen senior school.
We believe that is important at this stage for pupils to develop an enjoyment and love of English and reading. To this end the English department organizes regular trips and events including:-
-
Book Weeks
- Book Character Days
- Author Visits and Workshops
- School Book Fairs
- Theatre visits and workshops
To encourage reading within the school we run a reading award scheme, which all children participate in. For those children particularly keen on reading there are many other opportunities offered, including a Carnegie Prize shadowing group, the opportunity to become school librarians and opportunities outside school time to go and meet authors. We are always keen to support parents with their children’s reading and publish an annual suggested reading booklet.
