History, Site, Buildings & Facilities:

Old School

Glebe House founded in 1874, is a coeducational day and weekly boarding school for children from the ages of six months to thirteen years. Children can choose to become boarders from the age of seven years. The Main Building adjoins twelve acres of delightful playing fields, which overlook The Wash and the countryside of North West Norfolk.

A new purpose built block housing junior classrooms was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1992. A conversion of the old dormitory block, completed in 1995, now comprises the Senior School with an ICT suite, Art Studio and Design Technology Centre, Science Laboratory and specialist teaching rooms for English, History, French/German, Mathematics and Geography. In September 1996 a new music teaching and recital room Charleswas opened, as well as photography and pottery studio. A twenty five metre indoor heated swimming pool, all weather tennis and netball courts, adventure playground, and indoor gym all help to ensure that core academic subjects are well supported by a balanced and stimulating curriculum. In 1996 the school opened a Nursery so that it can now offer child care provision for children from six months prior to their entry to the Pre-Prep.

Aims, Attitudes & Values:

During a child's time at Glebe House dedicated staff work to ensure that each pupil is happy and successful working to their own ability. A fundamental aspect of school life is our hope that we can direct each child to reach their full potential, and give him (or her) the confidence to undertake new New Schoolexperiences without the fear of failure. A high standard of work and behaviour is expected, with emphasis on the growth of a sense of responsibility, a gradual development of self discipline and real consideration for the needs of others. The school offers a purposeful, supportive community within which individual and team ambitions are nurtured. The personal values of self-respect, dignity and pride in achievement are central to the philosophy of Glebe House.

Academic:

The School has always striven for high academic standards, offering small classes which blend traditional teaching and values with modern methods in all core and foundation subjects. We take the best of the National Curriculum and encompass it within a broad timetable which encourages the learning of Modern Languages from a young age, and the

development of skills in Art, Craft, Music, Drama and Sport. From the ages of four to eight years ancillary teachers support the qualified teaching staff, hearing every child read each day.

From the age of nine years children are taught by subject specialists who prepare them for Common Entrance and Independent Scholarship Examinations at 13+ (or the appropriate entry test for the school of their choice). With no direct tie to a particular Senior School, we can suggest schools which are appropriate to the needs and abilities of your child. If your child experiences difficulties with reading or mathematics, is dyslexic or has other special educational needs we have special needs teachers on site who can give individual tuition.

One 2 OneFrom the age of seven years children will stay until 5.50pm, which allows them time to do supervised prep in school. This means that when they return home at the end of the day, their work is completed and they can relax with their families. Working parents find the extended day (from 8.30am to 5.50pm) very convenient and almost all parents appreciate all academic work being completed at school!

The Pre Prep day normally finishes at 3.30pm, but children are welcome to stay for the Glebe House Out of School Time (GHOST) Club, which can be booked in the School Office for a regular day throughout a term or for occasional days as required. This runs every weekday and children go to High Tea before enjoying a variety of organised and free choice activities with specialists offering, for example, football and music, dance and drama. Children, who can be collected at any time up to 5.45pm, enjoy the extra activity and get used to a longer school day and parents appreciate the extra child-care and just the one pick up when they also have Prep aged children.

Sports & Other Activities:

Rugby

The main school sports are rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, rounders, athletics and swimming, with cross country taking an increasingly higher profile. There is an extensive programme of extra curricular activities to which the children have access.

Pastoral Care & Boarding:

The school prides itself on the high standard of pastoral care. Each child is allocated to a House and from Division III they are cared for by a House Tutor. The House system is very important and represents a major part in the life of the school. Good behaviour is encouraged by emphasising positive achievement, successes are celebrated at whole school assemblies and children are encouraged to bring outside awards to school for presentation. Bad behaviour is met by 'referrals' which are dealt with at the appropriate level for the misdeed. Care is taken to ensure the happiness of every child and to maintain the family atmosphere which has always been the tradition of the school. The resident Houseparents and other pastoral staff ensure that the children's health needs are looked after both as a routine term by term oversight and as required on a daily basis.

Dining Room

Boarding is very popular with the children at Glebe House who tend to want to board at some stage of their time with us. The Headmaster, John Crofts, and his family live in a flat within the Main Building and his wife Bridget oversees the care and welfare of the girl boarders, who occupy the top floor of the Main Building. The boys are in the care of the Housemaster, Charlie Thompson, who lives alongside the Boys' Boarding House in adjoining accommodation. There is a private payphone in each Boarding House to allow parent/children contact.

Diet:

Meals are prepared on the premises and menus are varied and interesting. There is always a choice of a salad, vegetarian or meat option at lunch, and the children are also offered milk and biscuits at mid morning break and a drink, sandwiches and cake for high tea. Boarders have a hot cooked supper and dessert or fruit each evening with a choice of vegetables or salad.seaside.jpg

Religion:

Pupils from all denominations are welcome but religious education and worship follows that of the Church of England. The values that underpin school life reflect those of the Christian Church.

Travel:

A coach service operates daily from Wormegay via Middleton, King's Lynn, Snettisham and Dersingham. This is available to children from the Reception upwards.

Glebe House Parents' Committee:

Summer Ball
There is a strong Parents' Committee within the school which is an ideal forum for new parents to get to know others. Throughout the year there are many social events which are organised by our Parents' Committee, culminating in the Glebe House Summer Ball on the penultimate night of the Summer Term. These events will ensure that you will feel welcomed from the outset of your child's career with us.

Charitable Status:

Glebe House School Trust Ltd is a registered charity (No: 1018815) which exists to provide an excellent education for girls and boys.
