French is taught to all pupils from Reception through to Division VIII, ultimately reaching the requirements of the National Curriculum, Common Entrance and Public School`s Scholarship examinations. German is taught to all pupils from Division VI through to Division VIII, with Spanish and Italian offered occasionally as an extra activity.
Aims & Objectives are as follows:-
- To inculcate in the pupils a sense of enjoyment and enthusiasm across all levels of ability when using a foreign language.
- To promote an appreciation of foreign cultures.
- To develop skills and the confidence which will enable pupils to understand the written and spoken language, and to be able to use it effectively for purposes of practical communication.
- To encourage positive attitudes towards the use of foreign languages and towards speakers of foreign languages.
Every summer the Department holds a special Pre-Prep ‘French Day’ aimed at stimulating the interest of the younger pupils and to learn more about the French culture. There are also trips abroad planned for the older children. In recent years Division VIII have been to Paris and from 2008 onwards a trip to Berlin will be organised for those pupils studying German.
