Our Main Aims of the Subject are:-
- To develop a positive attitude to and learn with confidence, understanding and pleasure.
- To encourage logical thinking and the realisation that there may be more than one way of solving a problem.
- To give children the opportunity to experience practical mathematical situations.
- To develop mathematical language and use appropriate vocabulary.
- To learn use the basic number operations.
- To prepare pupils for Common Entrance and when appropriate for scholarship examinations.
Pre-prep and pupils in Div III & IV are taught by form teachers with specialist staff for older pupils. Pupils in Div V and beyond will follow the ISEB curriculum and will be examined in the summer term. Pupils in Years 6 and 7 will also undertake a project work to improve independent study, using applied mathematical skills to develop understanding on how mathematics can be used in real-life scenarios away from his classroom.
In March four older pupils
represented the school in the regional finals of the UK Team mathematical
challenge held at Cambridge
Mathematical Sciences
University. In the competition
against many larger prep and state school that came a credible 22nd out of 32
teams. The event was aimed at challenging the mathematical gifted pupils. This
involved not only having to solve “hard sums” they had to play investigational
games that needed careful thought and strategic thinking.
