Prep Subject - Religious Studies |
Religious education can provide a rich and wide range of experiences inside and outside the classroom which give children opportunities to develop concepts and skills that will help them to make sense of their own experiences and beliefs, and to understand the beliefs and practices of members of faith communities. As Norfolk has a comparatively limited ethnic mix, we believe that it is an important part of Religious Education to encourage tolerance and respect for other cultures and faiths. The role of R.S. is to promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all pupils.
Aims & Objectives:-
- To promote the children's spiritual, moral, cultural and social development within the broad context of the Christian ethos.
- To enable pupils to understand the nature of Christian beliefs and practices and the beliefs and practices of other world faiths;
- To teach tolerance and challenge prejudice towards people of different faiths through providing opportunities to develop an understanding of the value of living in a multicultural, multi-faith and multi-lingual society;
- To help pupils reflect upon their own needs, experiences and questions and to confront what are sometimes referred to as ‘ultimate questions’;
- To encourage pupils to develop open minds to new and different concepts and to form their own opinions based on evidence and argument;
- To maintain close links with local churches and other religious communities;
- To learn from religions in addition to gaining knowledge and understanding about religions.
- To prepare children for Common Entrance examinations and, where appropriate, Scholarship exams.
The School is a Christian foundation and the teachings of the Christian Church underpin our assemblies which take place three times per week for the Senior School and everyday for the Junior School. At the same time we recognise that Great Britain is a Multi-faith community and provide many opportunities for our pupils to learn about and experience the beliefs and practices of other religious faiths.
We aim to develop a ‘hands on’ approach to Religious Studies and therefore are keen to involve members of faith groups from the local community. We regularly make visits to local faith centres including: St Mary’s Church in Hunstanton, Peterborough Mosque, Norwich Synagogue, Walsingham, Norwich Cathedral and the Buddhist centre in Norwich.
Additionally we encourage outside visitors such as the Salvation Army, the Samaritans, local clergy and other faith groups to come into the school to talk to our pupils.
