On Sunday
9th July, after a gap of five years, the tradition of a match between
the Old Aquilians and a Headmaster’s Xl was revived in glorious sunshine as a
finale to a splendid weekend with the annual Ball on the Friday and Prize Giving
on the Saturday with our Guest of Honour, Mark Slater, Headmaster of The Leys.
All three events benefitted from the marquee kindly provided by the Parents’
Committee. The Old Aquilians, captained by Nic Pull batted first and, with Ralph
O’Neill taking the lead with a rapid 50, reached 200 before the final wicket
fell. The Headmaster’s
Xl captained by Nick Skerritt had already appreciated the bowling of Nick’s 15
year old nephew, David Keenlyside, but even his 82 runs left the Head’s Xl 26
runs short as Mitchell Plumb, who had only become an Old Aquilian after leaving
school the day before, took the last two wickets. Relaxing over a drink and a
post match barbecue all agreed it had been a splendid occasion and, as the
Headmaster was presented the Iain Neave Memorial Salver to the OAs captain,
agreed to return in 12 months time.
